I aim to propose JR’s INSIDE OUT project to promote community capacity building opportunities throughout Sydney. It is for this reason I felt I needed to walk the walk to talk the talk.
The INSIDE OUT project follows JR’s large format street pastings which have proven to be widely successful in his earlier projects Portraits of a Generation, Face 2 Face, Women are Heroes, The Wrinkles of the City and Unframed. JR gets in his subjects’ faces with a 28mm wide-angle lens, resulting in portraits that are unguarded, funny, soulful, and real, that capture the spirits of individuals who normally go unseen. The blown-up images are pasted on urban surfaces – the sides of buildings, bridges, trains, buses, on rooftops; confronting and engaging audiences where they least expect it. INSIDE OUT gives everyone the opportunity to share their portrait and make a statement for what they stand for. It is a global platform for people to share their untold stories and transform messages of personal identity into works of public art.
Dubbed “the people’s art project”, INSIDE OUT’s goal is to give a voice to the people within their communities. Each INSIDE OUT group action around the world has been documented, archived and exhibited online. Over 200, 000 people from 112 countries and territories have participated.
